Prepare For Grade 1
The most important thing you can do to help your child come to school prepared is to check the Agenda page of the classroom website every night.
This is where you will find our daily/weekly agenda which will give you important information about due dates, field trips, special projects and messages from our classroom which you will need to know.
Welcome to Grade One!
Below are a few important things for parents and guardians to know about grade one.
We are so looking forward to teaching your child this year! Grade One is an important year in your child’s education. Many children will learn how to read and write this year. These skills are the foundation for your child’s future education. At home and at school we can build this foundation together.
Shoes and Clothing
Shoelaces: It is extremely important for your child’s safety and independence that they are able to put on and secure their own shoes. Please DO NOT send your child with shoelaces unless your child is able to tie them. Velcro is ideal!
Indoor Shoes: Please send your child with indoor shoes that are appropriate for running around in Physical Education which will stay at school.
Weather Considerations: We go outside several times every day no matter the weather unless it is -20 degrees Celsius or colder. This means we go out in rain, wind, snow and sunshine so please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately every day.
Labeling: To avoid losing clothing, shoes and lunchboxes, please write your child’s name inside their belongings with permanent marker. This makes it much easier to find and return lost items to their rightful owners!
*Please note that students are encouraged to leave valuable items at home to avoid damage or loss of these items. Toys are not permitted in class and you will be notified via the "agenda" page of this website if students are asked to bring something special to school such as a show and tell item or a stuffed animal for a special day.
Snack and Lunch
* Some children are allergic to peanuts and nuts, please avoid sending them in snacks and lunches.
Snack: Students need a snack every day. A snack is something healthy that is small enough to fit in the palm of your child’s hand.
*Please do your best to use re-useable containers, we are going to continue our work on litterless lunches!
*Please do not send a juice box for snack time, we do not have enough time to finish or manage them at snack, we have a water fountain in our classroom for use during this time but you are welcome to send a juice box for lunch. Thank you for your understanding and help with this!
Some examples of healthy, ready to eat snacks are:
-yogurt (with a spoon) or yogurt tubes
- cheese or cheese strings
-crackers
- ready to eat fruit (already cut/peeled)
-veggies
- granola bars (nut free)
*no juice at recess please!
Lunch: If your child attends the RMS lunch program, please pack your child a healthy lunch. This may include a sandwich or leftovers with fruit or veggies and a bottle of water. Just a reminder that the lunchroom does not have microwaves and will be unable to re-heat your child’s lunch.
*Please use re-useable containers when possible to help us in our litterless lunch program!
Communication
Website: The classroom website, as well as the Roland Michener School website are your primary sources of information. Please check the website every night.
Our school policy is BRING BACK BLUE. This means that any blue notices sent home must be signed and returned as soon as possible.
You may want to give your child a large freezer size ziploc bag to transport their library books, math puzzlers and any work or notices they may be bringing home safely. This helps keep them from getting bent, wet or misplaced in transit!
Contacting Your Child’s Teacher: You may call the school (403-777-8240) with any questions or concerns. Please be aware that we may not be able to respond immediately but will reply as soon as we are able.
Weekly Rollie Review and School Calendars: Weekly Rollie Reviews and calendars are posted online. Please check the RMS website for future newsletter postings. Please also ensure that RMS has your current e-mail address so that we can communicate with you via e-mail.
Work at Home
There are a few things you can do at home in a very small period of time that may support and assist your child’s learning.
Home Reading: Research has proven that only 10 minutes of reading a night can dramatically improve your child’s literacy skills! This is the most important thing you can work on with your child at home, please try to read with your child every night.
Your child has an account on Raz Kids so you can access appropriate leveled reading books from home at any time. We will update you soon on our classroom websites with the link and teacher username so that your child can use this reading resource at home.
Sight Words: Every week you will find a list of 5 new words on the “Sight Word” page of the website. They are high frequency sight words that your child will be working on reading without hesitation. Please practice reading these words with your child every night. We will add 5 new words each week until we have studied all 110 words! We will also be using these words in our daily reading, spelling and writing in class. The better your child knows these words, the more success they may experience in all areas of our literacy curriculum.
Math (10-15 minutes):
Students have access to a new program called mathletics, we will be sending home your child’s username and password to access this excellent practice program.
Additional Resources and Ideas for Home:
1. Go to the Calgary Public Library – There are so many books available at
every reading level or topic of interest and library cards are now FREE!
2. While preparing snacks and meals, let your child help while counting and
dividing things into groups such as pieces of cheese, crackers, any fruits or
veggies, raisins etc.
3. Use play-doh to shape and create letters and numbers, spell small words and
practice spelling words while strengthening your child’s hand muscles (helps
in printing). Using magnet letters on the fridge can be a fun way to match up
the lower case and upper case letters of the alphabet and write words!
4. Use the links we have posted on our website to access great programs,
videos and websites we recommend (see the “links” page of our
websites) to promote your child’s learning, if you do not have a
computer at home, remember that the Calgary Public Library has computers
available at no charge, many of the websites and games also have apps
and can be played on tablets and smartphones.
*Check out the links page of the classroom websites to get started and remember to always supervise your child’s computer time and talk with them about safety on the internet!*
Thank you!
I am looking forward to an exciting and wonderful year working with you and your children!
