Sight words
Our sight word program is beginning and there are a number of different ways we are encouraging instant recall of these words which will assist children in their literacy learning.
Why is sight word recognition important?
As children start learning to read it is important that they develop a bank of words that are known by sight which include high frequency (commonly used words) and other words that are important to the child. Learning high frequency sight words helps children build confidence and fluency in their reading, which can help make reading easier. Many sight words cannot be sounded out, so they ned to be memorized (for example, words such as said, the, come, there, were).
How to help at home:
-use short frequent practices
-directly teach and talk about the words, followed by practice!
-change the order of the words and practice
-make flashcards or a game (search "sight word games" online - there are a ton of ideas such as sight word tic tac toe so children are practicing but it feels like playing!)
-you read the word and have your child point to it
-make sentences using the sight word to put it into context
-find the words in books, newspapers, other media etc.
Learning to read is a lot of work and sight word recognition is only one part of the reading process. Thank you for your time and support at home. It will make a difference!
